The vss is screwed to the pumkin with a 10mm screw. To remove it unscrew the screw, pull off the connectorplug, and gently wiggle/twist the vss sensor. It pulls straight out but can be a pain in the a.. to get loose.
A rag and some cleaner (type brakeclean) is all it takes to clean it.
Install it again and try driving to see if your problem is solved.
Nope. Not solved. I went to a local tranny shop and had it (re)diagnosed. Well, the TC is not locking. At all. Ever. The solenoid pack is new, so I guess it's time for a new torque converter. I'm just having the tranny rebuilt, a heavy duty shift kit put in, and I'm getting one of those heavy duty billet steel TC's. If I'm gonna repair it, I may as well do it right and not have to fool with it ever again. Thanks for the help guys.

If anybody in the jacksonville, nc area has a code scanner that will tell me exactly what is going on, or knows of someone that can accurately read this trouble code for free, I would very much appreciate the help/info. Also, I never checked the VSS. How is that connection made on the pumpkin? Does the plug just snap in, or is it held in by some kind of set screw? Thanks for the help.
From my years of experience.on fault coads .I've learned that lots of things cause transmission problems.its been my experience that the transmission fluid temperature sensor is bad or faulty.this causes the transmission to go into limp mode gear lock out into only 3rd .also the engine coolant temperature sensor also causes transmission problems like no TCC lock up flashing of light ..one of these is probably the problem..could have a stuck off TCC seloinoid.or whats called a floating converter it will cause the converter to lock up in 2 ND 3rd and overdrive at ten miles mphor at 2000 rpms it's a safety thing gm came up with .it's called running in hot mode ..and points back to the TFT TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE SENSOR..hope this helps .or ECT
