If you're talking about the front axle u-joints, the answer is no. You have to dig in there pretty deep to get the axles out. That's why I replaced mine when I did my ball joints. Because it was so far in there.

The 4x4 hub bearing assembly has to be removed from the knuckle. You don't have to remove the ball joints to get axle out, though. You may find it easier to remove the tie rod on drivers side for ease of removal. I just did it to do same job, replace broken driver's side U joint.
