Need to replace the front driver side outer U-Joint, does..
the shaft have to come out? It looks like I can get to it in place with the proper u joint tool. Any one have any advice or suggestions. It's a 1988 F250 HD 4x4 460ci. Also can anyone tell me what front end I have? The tag on the diff reads 3 54 E8TA

You can try it in the truck, but on my 1/2 ton, I had the shaft out and in a press. It went up to about 20 tons before the u-joint finally broke loose. The more I think about you trying to wrestle with it in the truck, the more I doubt you could have enough room to to it.
I don't know what type of frontend you have (maybe a dana 44?) but it looks like it has 3.54 to 1 gears in it.
