Its all about money, bushed rods cost .Iam trying to put this thing together for under $1800. The best price for clev. pistions hung on bushed 400 rods is $500.00 If you know anybody that can do it for less let me know!!! I think I could get a lot more out of the $500 putting in to a 460.
$1800 isn't a lot of money to do a decent hi-po rebuild on any engine these days, 400 or 460. Assuming you can find a good 460 to rebuild, i.e. an older one which hasn't been smogged to death just like the 400s, you still have to get the parts to do the conversion. I'd be willing to bet you're going to spend more than $500 for the motor mounts, oil pan, accessory brackets, exhaust manifolds, etc. that it's going to take to convert it.
I agree bill, 1800 dollars will get you a long ways with these engines...but not as far as with some other engines. I have a heavily modded 460 in my 89 f350 and it is a very nice engine...and a money pit as well.
My 400 I have over 2 grand into it already and it is still sitting on an engine stand lol.
Too bad you weren't here a few weeks ago... You could have bought all the flat top 400 piston's you wanted for about $125 / set. Those pistons were set up to produce 9.0:1 on a rebuild with about a .010/.010 cleanup decking of the block and heads.
What did you pay for those pistons off e-bay? they were for a 400 @.020 over right? Because I remember seeing a set like those. I wonder if he has any more?
I got quiet a bit less than $500 invested in bushing my rods. The actual cost of bushing the rods shouldn't be over $75. You'll have to pay to get your pistons pressed off and then pressed back on again with any motor and then any other work you want to get done to the rods. If you start on any motor and do a performance build-up you're probably gonna replace the pistons anyway and the pistons themselves are the majority of the cost.
I got though to dynagear yesterday and they told me they are producing the old badger piston #40010F (9.1:1)as we spoke, and it should be ready for shipments in a few weeks. I'll check back with them then and keep you posted.
I found the article on this site under:
ford-trucks.com/articles/mblock.php.
It is a very interesting read, especially since I just got my own 400. It says Ohio Piston is offering a 9.5:1 piston for the 400. Gooa luck and let me know what you find.
Ya but Ohio piston is long gone!!! From what I have found is dynagear has bought it's tooling and is in the process of manufacturing these pistons in the near future.
