Tranny Question

I'm building a 48 F1 with a 300/6. The rear has 3.73 gears and the tires are 29" tall. With the C6 I have now I'll be running about 2600 rpm @ 60 mph. I'm wondering if anyone can give me info on how the 6 handles the AOD. I've read where the C6 draws alot of power, is the AOD any better?
Thanks,
Brian

AOD takes less power/torque to operate, and will usually hold up pretty decent behind a 300, if it has been properly adjusted when 1st installed.
The C6 consumes the most power when 1st starting to move. Once you're moving, the power consumption drops rather quickly.

Really, the biggest advantages of the AOD are taller gearing + locking convertor = better MPG. This is even more true with 3.73 rear gears.

Thanks for the reply, thats the info I was hoping for. The OD would make the highway cruise much better.

Look for an '88-'93 AOD, and consider some beef up work. Most of the issues were ironed out in those models.

In the propaganda at these sites, you can see what they offer in their transmissions, and what parts they sell to compensate for AOD issues:

AOD Transmission from PATC, AOD Transmissions

TCI - Ford AOD, AODE and 4R70W

AOD Performance Products - Baumann Electronic Controls

My nephew did just that swap. A C6 to an AOD and loves it. Cruises down the highway ever so easily. The AOD also has a little lower 1st gear, so it helps when taking off. All he did differently to the engine was put in lighter step up springs in the carb(Edelbrock). No word on the new mpg's yet.

E4OD is a lot stronger, BUT it's as big as a house, and requires a $500 controller for the OP's application. Other than that.....

Thanks Guys, I think I'll go the AOD route, no electronics to mess with. I don't think strenght will be an issue since I'm building a cruiser not a racer.
