I bought a 97 Expedition from salvage, someone had tried to steal it and completely destroyed the steering column.

- Is the column the same as the F150's and for what years?
- I have looked for a removal procedure online but as of yet have not found one, does anyone know of one?
- Is there anyway to start the truck, keeping in mind ignition and shifter were destroyed. I could not find a way to start it, it seems that everything is enclosed in metal. The idiots who tried to steal it must of had a large hammer or pry bar, it's a mess.
- I can't get it up my driveway so I would like to start it and put it in drive, anyone that knows these systems help me out

Thanks guys I think it's worth the work, just a little hard to get up the driveway into the shop, there's snow outside and my Bronco just won't get it up the driveway.

 

Did you get it moved and have you found a steering column yet?

 

I am amazes that there are no Expeditions at the Pick-N-Pulls in Alberta or F150s, which should fit your truck.

Yes I found a steering column out of a Expedition, there is a wrecker about 20 miles away that had several, I paid $145 for a complete unit, that is steering wheel, air bag, key and key fob, everything that I needed. I was lucky and managed to program the antitheft PATS system myself to the new key and fired it up. It runs well, some small things that I will look at fixing. I still need to put the dash back together, I had to strip it right down, but that won't take long.
So far I have $850 into it including purchase price, I figure I will put another $600 into it before I am satisfied with it. Its a '98 XLT with 230,000 klics (143,000 Miles) on it. It sits pretty tall, it has 33's on it, body is in great condition and tires are new. Thanks for all the work you went through, I had given up on this site for help, lol.

 

Always glad to help. The price wasn't too bad from a normal yard. Did you get 2 or more keys with the column or did you find a way around the 2 key requirement to program?

 

No just the one key, in the 96 to early 98 fords you can use one key and a process that takes about an hour to do. If you want it let me know
