hey guys I have a 77 f250 with a 460 in it I am wondering If its safe to flush this old motor out with one of those hot detergent machines, Im worried about having the seals leak after the treatment? any opinions, thanks
Why would you chance it? Hot flushing engines is never ever a good thing and will just harm it. Is it filled with sludge or carbon? Use Auto Rx its well proven safe and works go over to Bob Is The Oil Guy - Forums powered by UBB.threads™ and search for it. Lots of good reading to do. STAY AWAY FROM THE HOT FLUSH KEROSENE MACHINE!!!
Has anyone ever heard of using transmission fluid to flush the engine. I heard it works but you have to be extremely careful. I have even been told (by others that have done it) that it eliminated some minor engine knocks. What say you???????
my dad used to talk about old school tricks like that and maybe in the 70s you could get away with it but not sure about todays motors? but wort a little research so im gonna see what I can find besides my motor is 30 years old.
Flushing the cooling system is one thing. Oil system is another. Transmission fluid has been used, Marvel Mystery oil is another. As alway's, carefull what you wish for. Everything you break loose has to go somewhere. You run the chance of clogging the oil pickup tube and screen. Seafoam will remove the carbon buildup from valves and just burn it up. A little MM will free sticking lifters, but I'd be leary of trying to actually clean everything out.
running a quart of ATF in the engine won't really hurt much. The reason it works is a very high detergent package in it. BUT with that said stay away from the new merconV or other synthetic versions of ATF. Mercon/dextron or type F is fine. if your engine uses a quart of oil every so often, just add a quart of ATF the last time before you know your going to do an oil change. Over time this will slowly clean out the engine without the sudden rush of sludge that blocks the oil pump etc.
I am not a fan of flushing motor becouse sometimes they hold way more sludge then one could imagine, but have helped do it becouse friends wanted too. Probily becouse I never junkyarded motors for my own use.
But if you have to do it I would get the engine warm fill the engine with a sludge remover and use a big drill to prevent wear becouse of oil starvation.
I have used gas and diesel to good effect on old motors we got out of wrecked vehicles, but I always flushed them once with 3qts light weight oil. Before I re-filled with the regular oil for such an engine, and pre-lubed it once more.
I prefer the drill method becouse the chances of damaging the bearing if a piece of whatever blocks oiling goes down, and if sludge still come out you know to keep going. Something a running motor can tell you the hard way.
If you think it's really gunked up buy a bunch of cheap oil and several quarts of Sea Foam or MMoil and some cheap filters. Add a quart of the treatment and run the engine 200 miles and change the oil and filter and do it again till your happy. Get it good and warm before changing.
I would never run just a "flush" or straight anyhing through my engine. The bearings could sieze in a Ney York second.
