Thanks Mike. I saw it on Friday when I was searching Google for a 215 crank. I pulled another crank out of a parts motor on Saturday and dropped it off at the machine shop. I'll know on Wednesday if that crank is any good. I'm hoping that it is. If not, then I may have to drop the $150 on the one on Ebay if it's still available. Still no gaurantees on that one either.
2nd crank was found to be cracked as well. The search has begun for a good crank.
Found a vendor online that has two cranks from a 215 (one from a 52 and another from a 53). The vendor will have them magnufluxed to see if either one (or both) are any good. If he can get at least one good crank, it'll cost me close to $200 with shipping. Ouch!
If you want....I'll give you a complete 215...the crank is probably good. The engine "ran when parked"...
Dan
I appreciate your offer. However, at this point, I'm done with taking engines apart and dealing with the mess. I have another complete 215 at home that also came out of a running car, but I'm not in the mood to take apart another engine, especially one that's complete and together.
I should have never thrown away the other 215 block that I had, which still had all of its internals. That block probably had a good crank.
I already put down a $100 deposit with the vendor. I'll get a refund if both cranks are bad. If they are, then I'll let you know and will gladly take you up on the offer.
The 215 and 223 have the same stroke. The difference between them is the bore. It is common to bore 215s to 223 standard when rebuilding as the pistons are easier to get (or at least used to be...).
The good news is that the crank turned out to be good after magnafluxing and I received it last Friday.
The bad news is that when I opened the package today at the machine shop, we found this...
Thanks to UPS, the it's now a custom two-piece crank. The box was marked FRAGILE in several areas and also had a UPS sticker stating that the box was very heavy. The box didn't have any obvious damage on the outside, but one drop on an end would cause the crank to break. I called the seller immediately and advised him of what happened. He's supposed to call me back tomorrow to let me know how he'll rectify the situation. He has another crank and I'll ask him to send it to me as a replacement at no cost if it's good after being magnafluxed. If not, then I'll request a refund and will try to find another crank somewhere else.
I'd be real interested to see a super-close-up of the break. Maybe it's a shadow, but it looks to me like it was cracked already along the line in red. I think it would take more than a casual bump to crack a crank in half.
