how long does an alternator last?

I read 12.7 right after starting and then it climbs to 13.1 or 13.2 once the glow plugs are off. Never ever seen system voltage higher than that. The alternator lead hits 14.4 after its just started and once its excited. Then it drops to 13.8 on the alt lead once the system is at 13.1. This is exactly what voltages I get before with my 5 year old batteries and now with my new Motorcraft 850's.

I replace my Alt evey 2 years, First real cold snap and the Autozone alt dies.
Local store stocks them and I can do it in the parking lot in 15 minutes.
I read 12.3 before start. 11.8 with the glow plugs cycling. the 13.2 to 13.4 at idle and 13.5 to 13.8 at 2000 RPM crusing.
