I have an E99 F350 PSD with 190K on it. I bought it used several years ago. I have been upgrading with my goal being reliability and an increase in power.
Now I am looking at the alternator and wondering how much longer it is going to last. I have no idea if it is original or what.
I am also wondering if a power upgrade on the alternator would be a good idea.
How long do these usually last and what might be available?
Alternator brushes last for 100k-200k depends how much power you use. Voltage regulators are cheap enough to replace if you are not sure about alternator age.
Ford alternators don't have good reliability records, what is another story. I suspect lot of alternators got replaced needing brushes only.
Mine is 120 amp and I think it is standard for SD. Can't imagine using more than that unless you have mobile office on the truck running coffee maker and microwave oven at the same time.
Voltage regulator is small part mounted on the alternator. Usually it is very easy replacement, but designs vary. With my experience I do it even without disconnecting the battery, but that is hardly advised.
I believe you'll find that the voltage regulators are built into the alternators and are not generally serviceable separately. Some specialty alternator shops may be able to, but those are becoming more and more uncommon.
