I have an 07 F-150 and heard that they have a multi-piece spark plug in them. Any truth to this and when should I change them? I have 61,000 on it now.
This is very true... They fixed it on 07, BUT I heard some of the earlier 07 models were still effected. Even with 61 thousand miles on it, if you are one of the unlucky 07 owners that were made before they swapped over to the new heads, then you will still end up breaking them off. They make a tool to get them out, 60 bucks on Amazon.
It is time consuming.
Go here, this guy gives a pretty good detailed description on getting those plugs out.
They aren't really that bad to deal with if you have the proper tool. Sometimes you can find them on e-bay for around 35 bucks. The issue is that the bottom extension of the plug is a separate sleeve that is pressed onto the main plug and they will seize the walls of the cylinder head, then when trying to remove them they will actually separate from the main plug and sometimes ( most times ) will break off the porcelain with them, a very nasty mess to deal with without the appropriate tool. Champion makes a replacement plug that is an all steel one piece plug that will alleviate this problem in the future, don't know why motorcraft can't.
I would highly recommend the Champion plug when you do undertake this "routine maintenance."
I shopped around and found the best price at the time from Summit Racing, part number CPN-7989
They are a little more pricey, but as far as I know are the only 1-piece replacement as of yet.

What I understand is that the fix came in late 2007 so that would make those 2008 models.
I've stuck with Fords my whole life but everything I own is many years old. Stories like this make it hard to maintain brand loyalty. I am not looking forward to the day when I will need to purchase a 'modern' vehicle...
