Trailer Brake Controller Install

Hi guys, thanks for all the great advice, this thread is awesome. I bought my first diesel liast year when i was 16 and i can't go back. I have a love for the black smoke they produce and the rattle of a dieselI have another question. Does anyone know how to install a trailer brake controller? I pull a 27ft enclosed trailer and it takes a pretty long way to stop it, and its really not the safest thing ever. Any ideas??

time and paitence there shoiuld be a couple of wiring harnesses by the spare with all the wires you need and under the dash in the middle there should be a square conector for the brake controller make sure to mount it somewhere on the back bumper where it wont get bent or broke off like going through a ditch dont ask me how i know but mine is now mounted in the bumper

It depends on what year your truck is, about '90 or '91 they changed some electrical on the trucks.

Like greywynd says, it depends on the year of your truck. Newer ones can have some of the stuff prewired, older ones may not. Also depends if the previous owners did anything.

The basics would be a fused 12V line from the battery. A wire from the brake light switch (the side with power when you step on the pedal). A ground wire. And a wire to the back of the truck where your trailer connector is. Mount the controller in a convenient spot where it is easily reachable for adjustments/ emergency use, but not where it will get in the way or get bumped in daily driving.

If you scroll down on the main forum page, there is a forum on towing, search through there and do some reading. There is a bunch of good information on wiring up your truck.

Year of truck?
like stated in previous posts... wiring may very for some years iirc yes there will be a square greyish plug at the bottom center of the dash. if your truck is equipped with the tow package than it will have all the wires pre run to the rear of the truck. if not than that connector wont engage the brakes on the trailer. ill see if i can find a pic that will help determine if your truck has the trailer or towing package.
