I got a trailer brake controller for Christmas and need to install it. Does anyone know of a good link with instructions? Is it hard to install? Suggestions/tips?
Typically, if you already have the 7-pin connector at the hitch, you can get the custom pigtail that will plug into the factory connector under the dash. When I purchased my Prodigy Controller, I also bought the adapter pigtail. I only had to mount the bracket, plug-in and done!

can you send me this info too, my truck is 2001 f250sd 4x4 , but i look under dash and all i have are the wires no connector there, does it make any diference?
thanks
Peter
To orient yourself, that's with the panel under the dash removed, looking from the drivers side door, towards the center, under the radio and climate controls.
The gray plug is the OEM trailer harness plug. The brown plug is the Ford specific harness for the trailer brake controller.
thanks Stewart
so you can just unplug it and get trailer brake with this plug, or you have to hook those wires to the trailer brake wires? i never had to install one ,
sorry for all the questions

The gray plug doesn't have anything plugged into it (it's an "empty" plug) until you plug your brake harness into it. It's part of the OEM harness, provided by Ford, just waiting for you to plug your brake controller harness into it.
I have a Tekonsha Prodigy controller. Most brake controllers come with a generic 4 wire harness. You can also get a brand specific harness (in this case, Ford) to use. This makes it easier to hook up your controller, because there is no splicing of wires involved, just plugging in the harness to make it work.
In the picture below, you can see the generic wiring harness that comes with the brake controller.
The black, flat plug you see on the harness plugs into the back of the controller, and the other end must be spliced into the wires under your dash.
Now, in this picture below, the same black flat plug plugs into the back of the contoller, but on the other end is the Ford specific plug that plugs into the gray plug in the picture I posted in the above post.
Having this Ford specific harness means you don't have to splice anything. All you have to do is locate the gray plug and plug your harness into it.
I want to Install my Prodigy controller, BUT, the PO cut the factory plug. Now I have to figure out the colors, They don't appear to be the same colors as Fords wires. I could be mistaken, could someone clarify. I have the prodigy pictured above
Thanks
here are all the wires in the system;
brown=illumination
brown/white=trailer running lamps
black/light green=trailer backup lamps
dark blue=trailer electric brake feed (output from electric brake)
dark green= trailer right stop/turn lamp
yellow= trailer left stop/turn lamp
light green=stop lamp feed to brake control
orange=trailer battery feed (hot with ket in run only)
red= trailer electric brake control feed
white=ground
Dan, look real good up under the dash and follow those wires. I thought someone cut mine also but then I finally found the plug but it was way up there. Only other suggestion I have is to put plug in connectors on the wires and keep changing them around until you get the right combo.
On second thought I just looked and found my old brake controller. The wires under the dash do you have 5 wires? Brown, white, blue, green, and red? If so what worked for me is
