Here is the story, 08 250 with 98,000 miles goes into ford dealership with a noise coming from the engine, sounds like a knock. THey say its nothing and send it out the door. Coming home this morning from a road trip and #8 rod comes apart and destroys the engine. Now the truck has 101,000 miles and ford says tuff luck is there anything that can be done since the truck was under warranty when first brought in. THis is not my truck it belongs to a buddy I'm just trying to help save him $16,000 dollars they qouted him for repairs and was wondering if this is a common problem with 6.4's. Thanks
I"m sure he still has the invoice the truck is used for his business so he keeps all records, he is in tenn where the truck broke down I"ll tell him to contact ford and see what they say.
If the problem/concern was documented before the warranty expired then they have an obligation to fix the truck. At least thats how my situation worked. I took a previous truck in for overheating, sent me away saying all was ok. 5k later I popped the HG's. When the warranty issue came up Ford initially denied it but when I showed my receipt where I originally took it in, they decided to honor it.
#8 rod comming apart is more common then many wish to know about. and as stated its caused by a failed egr cooler bending the rod in everyone I have seen so far.
Cheezit, how common are EGR cooler failures on 6.4's? Do they fail nearly as often as the 04 and up square 6.0 coolers? Also, when the connecting rods bend, how obvious of a knock do they typically make?????

You are 100% correct, i've been there myself, although on a MUCH smaller scale.

we see them often enugh to be good enugh at beating the pay times
not even as close in numbers in as 6.0l egr cooler failers.
the sond of the knock is normmaly very hard to hear. but thats also relitive to the extend of the bend. the sad part here is the eingine can compensate will enguh that you may never know it.
Are there EGR delete kits available for the 6.4 PS like there are for the 6.0 PS? I'm thinking that if I haven't grown my family and upgraded to a newer crew cab super duty by the time my warranty expires, then I will probably pay a good diesel mechanic to get rid of every piece of emissions equipment on the truck. I know the DPF would be gone, along with getting the appropriate DPF delete tuner, but can one completely remove the EGR on the 6.4?
It can be done I was over on the powerstrokenation forum and there were a bunch of guys that were doing it over there. There is a lot of info on it there.
My truck went to the shop with major problems last week, would not even pull itself but would sit and idle but no go. 98,000 miles on it and it was the EGR. I actually thought my motor was toast. Runs fine now after getting fixed "under Warranty".
