I've had my Ranger for just over 4 years now, and the cruise control has never worked. Now that I'm commuting 100+ highway miles several times a week, I'd like to put a little more effort into figuring out why... </ br></ br>I can hit the on button and then the set/accel button, and the indicator light will come on in the dash, but it will not maintain speed. Does this sound like a VSS issue? If I were to make a trip to the junkyard, what other components would you guys suggest I snag to try and swap out? Thanks!
When you hit the brake does the indicator light go out like it's supposed to?
My guess is that it's either
(1) a failed (or disconnected) speed control servo (the servo is under the hood, mounted on the right front fender and connected to the throttle linkage with an actuator cable), or
(2) something in the circuit (wiring) is messed up, like for example, the clock-spring wire harness (located behind center of steering wheel) is pinched and shorted out.

I just drove up the street to check, and yes it does. Also, I never thought to try this before, but I verified that the light will not come on unless I'm going at least 30 mph... To me, that indicates that the VSS is working correctly.
...well, I could have sworn I'd looked at it before, but the cable from the servo you described was disconnected from the throttle body. I hooked it back up, and it works! It seems like someone would have had to deliberately disconnect it though... I wonder why?

Lol. I had an '84 4bbl Mustang years ago, and I'd heard of people disconnecting the cruise on them when racing. Maybe the PO liked giving school buses a run for their money at the drag strip?
Well, I was driving home yesterday with the cruise on, and while it tried to maintain speed up a steeper hill, the accelerator sprung back up to its resting position. The cruise cable snapped off, apparently trying to pull the throttle open past WOT. Mystery solved
2.3L obviously doesn't have the power, but the cruise control does. Glad you've got it fixed, but the cruise control should shut off if the speed drops much below the chosen speed and certainly before a cable breaks.
Had the very same problem with my 2002 Ranger Edge, The problem is the master cylinder switch which is mounted on the top end of the master cylinder, it has two wires that connect to it. I would get one at the junk yard from a similar year and make. My problem has been fixed after hours of troubleshooting with just this switch replaced.
