2004 2WD 6.0L Diesel Excursion, Auto. all stock/OEM
I've recently drained the water from the fuel separator, replaced the fuel filters, chainged the oil and oil filter, cleaned the air filter, and replaced the heater control valve.
Compared to last year, towing the same small enclosed trailer, fuel mileage dropped from 16 to 17 mpg to 11 to 12mpg (hand calculated) and morning startup is a bit rougher than previous. At startup, at least one cylinder is not firing for a few minutes, of course the colder the weather, the worse it is. There are no dash CEL lights.
I have a few weeks between racing seasons to give the truck some attention, any thoughts on where I should start?
Sounds like injector stiction. What kind and weight of oil are you running? Do a search on "stiction" on the 6.0 forum.....that will keep you busy for a few days.....
Thanks for the direction, unfortunately I'm familiar with stiction in my day job with high precision, low volume valves....
The oil I'm using is the manual recommended weight, a castrol synthetic blend, I think... It's difficult to find anything other than "diesel" when comparing oils here, they are all the same with different bottles...
Are you getting smoke at startup during the rough running period? The color of the smoke may help get you in the right direction. I'd recommend a full synthetic oil - 15w40 made specifically for diesels. I had one customer who had similar symptoms and we moved him to Amsoil and it resolved his issue. This is the one we sell: AMSOIL Synthetic Diesel Motor Oil, Engine Oil
