Be careful what you get. If you have an alarm system or anything else that uses the phone line I would steer clear. Do not go with Charter phone service in particular.
I have had Brighthouse (Roadrunner) with the whole package, and now Verizon Fios, with the whole package. They both worked fine. If you have a home alarm, they can hook that up too. I don't know what service you have in your area, but the two I have used worked fine.
At work I know we have a T1 and have used Cbeyond without any major issues for about 3 years now. Having a monitored alarm system when we were broken into did not hinder police response, but we have discovered the police can respond to a false alarm caused by someone not entering their code right MUCH faster than they can respond to an actual break in.
I have had customers that dumped them after they kept razing the rates..
One of the customers kept having issues with the router and dropping out..
I have the comcast digital phone with no issues..
If your thinking about magic jack forget it.. Not good for uses as a home phone, but it is good for what it was invented for.. Sales people to call home from the road without paying high phone charges..

Alarm systems do not necessarily work with the VOIP systems. They may work fine for a while and then it may not. It is not reliable.

Just bought a new house and have terrible cell reception at it... so I am looking at having to install a land line maybe. Looking to see if voip is a decent way to go to save money over a traditional line. Do not know if I can even get cable there... pretty rural town.

I've known several people, my parents included, who have MagicJack and love it. The wife and I are planning to go MagicJack, but I've chosen to build up a separate, dedicated computer for that purpose rather than having it tie up one of our gaming boxes...
The only issue I have with MagicJack is they don't have any ability to port your existing phone # over yet... They were supposed to add that feature last August...

I have a wireless internet service here (Microserve) and while it works great for internet and movies on Netflix, it is not enough to run a phone properly. I used to have Vonage in WA when I had cable internet, and while it worked ok if you were on the computer at the same time the phone would click a lot and the conversation would cut in and out.
There are home base booster antennas for cellphones available, you can set up another base model phone on your plan as a home phone. I'm doing this tomorrow, to get rid of the non-functional VOIP phone we have now.

Check with your cell carrier and see if they have something like this:

What kind of speed do you see with that? I've got wireless line of sight for my internet, but I don't think it's anywhere near fast enough to download netflix.

we had the same problem at our new house.
we bought a cell phone extender from verizon.
all the carriers have one.
you plug it into your cable system....$279 with no monthly fees.
now we have five bars all the time.
just like VOIP, if your cable goes out, you are back to crap.

I have the same issue with cell reception at my house and they told me this will help.
I got sticker shock and said no thanks, but if you have all 5 all the time, the maybe I can do this and dump the land line.
