I just put a boost gauge in the dash of my 2004 F250. It's in the blank spot just to the right of the sreering column. (pictures in my album) The ground wire was easy. I'm looking for a easy wire to get to that is only on when the truck is running. It dosen't need to be a dash light wire because I leave my lights on all the time while driving anyway.
The easiest wire for you to use would be wire 294, the same wire that is used to power the high idle mod which only has power when the key is on. Wire 294 is a white wire with a light blue stripe. It is located on the right hand side of the driver's area. Locate the OBD II connector. Follow the wire bundle off the back side of the connector about 6 inches up. It may be visible but use a flash light to make it easier. The end of the wire will have a piece of black tape on the end of it. The wire runs off of fuse 29 which is a 10 amp.
If you did want to get a dash light wire there is one included on the trailer brake controller pig tail that plugs in just to the right of the steering column. Then your boost gauge would dim or brighten as you adjusted the dash lights just like factory. Thats where I get the dash light power for all of my aftermarket gauges.
On the trailer brake controller pigtail that is usually in the glove box on a new truck there are 5 wires. They are labeled but 4 go to most aftermarket brake controllers and one (a small gauge brown wire) is for dash illumination for some brake controllers that may need it. It is rectangular 6 pin socket (may only have 5 pins in it, but there are room for 6) I think its gray in color behind a brace to the right of the column once you pull that fuse access plate down from under the wheel. If you already have a trailer brake controller follow the wires from it to that plug.
I found the pigtail in the glove box. It only has 4 wires white, blue, grn, and red. The tag connected to it lists 5 colors including brown, but it's not there. I located the matching connector under the dash and it doesn't include the brown wire either. Any other ideas where I can pick up the dash illumination wire?
At most auto part stores you can buy the tools to remove the factory radio (if you still have it) for less than $5. If you already have an aftermarket radio, you can remove the radio or use the U shaped tool to pull a factory unit and there will be a dash light wire in the factory harness feeding the radio. You can tap into it for gauge light power also. Should still be brown. Probe the wires with a test light until you come to one that dims with the dash lights and splice your aftermarket gauge to that one.
