Quite often it is the switch that's shot. Try turning the wipers to different speeds when it does it and press the button extra hard....see what that does. If that doesn't seem like the problem then take a test light and check power at the washer pump while someone presses the button.
'92-96 trucks use a wiper/washer control module mounted inside the dash behind the glove box. They're famous for going bad. Check this site for info on how to test/replace it:
this may sound really redundant, but have you checked to see that the nozzels arent plugged? this happens a lot on mine cause im crap at waxing that cowl. just a thought to go the simple way.
Seems like this switch design is prone to problems, at least both of my Ford vehicles have this same problem. I think the contacts oxidize if they are not used for a few weeks.
What works for me is to push in the **** and then twist it while it is pushed in. Seems to worm.
I have heard you can get the intermittent wipers to work better with a spray contact cleaner. Maybe this will also help the washer? I personally have not been able to get the cleaner into the switch section enough to do a good job. One of these days I am going to take it apart or drill a hole for the spray.
You can clean the insides of the switch better by taking it apart. Pop off the end cap with a knife and remove the screw. Then carefully pull the plastic part off. There's small contacts and a spring inside that are easy to lose. Spray everything down with electric contact cleaner and make sure everything is clean inside. Reassemble and it should work better.
I would check the contacts on the washer pump. The pump is at the bottom of the washer fluid tank. Sometimes the contacts on the plug end of the wire harness that connects to the pump under the tank gets loose or dirty. You may be able to reach down and wiggle the connection enough to get it working. Let a friend hold the washer control while you do this. It worked for me. Good luck. jake.
I had the same problem with my '95. Actually I had two problems. My washers would work intermittently and was caused by the connection at the pump. My wiper controls were also intermittent (even the intermittent function!). I fixed that as described above, by removing the cap, screw and switch and cleaning with contact cleaner. I put a coat of dielectric grease on the contacts and it works as good as new.
Just watch for the detent pins and spring if you clean the switch, they may fly...
Thanks for the advice so far. If it wasn't so darn cold here I would try this out. No heated garage to work in. As for the speed issue,No matter what speed the wipers are moving, nothing happens. I only here a clicking noise coming from behind the glove box. I figure this is the windshield washer control module. If its clicking does that mean it's working or not working.? Does any one make an aftermarket control module?
Doc, It's tough to say if it is the control module behind the glove box from here. I do know that the control module does make clicking noises which is normal when wipers/washers are in operation. And yes, the cold does make it very tough when trying to work on a truck. Been there. Good luck once the weather gets mild. Lol. Jake.
Bless you Brown4x4. I will try this right away. And duh, why didn't I think of trying to pry the cap off. I just assumed it was sealed and that I had to remove the whole stalk, doh. Jeez learn something new all the time.
