I have a 99 250 sd. As engine warms up, sounds like a pressure relief valve opens up. The truck is limited on power until it reaches normal opperating tempeture. then it runs perfect. any thoughts?
What you have is a valve that closes in the system to cause back presure, this back presure helps the engine warm up. If you wish to confirm this, let us know, we can talk you through as to where to unplug this valve.
You should hear it through a 4" exhaust and no muffler..
IT is not a problem, give me one second to go out and snap a picture, This will tell you what to unplug.
A quick description though, at the bottom of the turbo, you can see the plug, you will have to look under the babys butt ( technical name for it). Flip the lock forward ( silver piece of spring metal, forward it towards the front of the truck) and unplug. If you choose to run with out it, it doesnt seem to make a difference in warm up time.
I see Pat has you on the right track. I would not unplug this if you live in a cold state. You can step on the brake pedal or the go pedal to make it quit. The EBPV is closing to help your engine warm up faster. I don't get to hear the jet engine very often where I live, but I love the sound it makes.
Oh shoot, Ricks here.. and he is going to see my engine compartment..THe flash light is shining right down on top of it, this is taken fron the drivers side.
Use a long narrow screw driver to carefully flip that clip up, then un plug..

As others have said, its just how our trucks are designed. It's there for a good reason.
