Axle code?

Well I've decoded my plate as best as I can but it sais ..... 08 for the axle code which to my understanding is ford 3.50 ratio but there's no code for the front axle?? 4x4 of course. Is this common?

Look for a letter near the axle code 08. J designates 2500 limited slip and the K is a 3500. This is for a 1970.

For my 1968 you would see B to L. So it depends on what year model truck you have.

It is a 70 F100 4x4. There is no letter after 08?
Also the rear being a {08} Ford rearend does that mean it is a 9" with 3.50 gear ratio?

The front axle code is not always listed. If the door code calls for a 3.50 Ford rear axle your front axle is probably a Dana 44 3.54 which is fairly common. The 3.54 is close enough to the 3.50 to not be a problem. If your truck would have come with the Dana 60-3 rear axle, which is a heavier duty axle than the 9 inch, it would have been a 3.54

Great to know. I am almost certain that it is a Dana 44. No markings or tags on it. Is there a way to tell for sure? I need a drivers side outer stub shaft and I wanted to make sure I get the right one.

Usually the AXLE code listed on the Warranty Plates of 1965/72 F100/250's is TWO digits, which refers to the rear axle only.

If there is a single third digit, that refers to the front axle.

Dana 60.3 rear axle: Optional in 1966/69 F100's. Not available after 1969.

1970/72 F100: Ford offered two different 9 inch rear axles.

One has a 9" ring gear, 28 spline axleshafts and a 3,300 lb. rear axle capacity. The other has a 9 3/8" ring gear, 31 spline axleshafts, Traction-Lok and a 3,600 lb. capacity.

Only five parts of the 9 3/8" rear axle are the same as the 9: Housing gasket; pinion seal; pilot bearing retainer; (1) pinion bearing and (1) race.

EVERYTHING else is different!
