My brake lights on the drives side quit working, both truck and trailer. I recently installed a new turn signal switch. There have been several issues other than the brake lights; The backup lights are on in drive and the start lock-out is out of adjustment, the shifter needs to be placed very close to reverse.
As it turned out, during the blinker switch installation I disassembled more than necessary.
The shifter problem is minor, it helps theft-proof the vehicle, but the brake light issue and the backup lights are a safety issue. Does anyone have information regarding the issues.
The neutral safety switch controls both the start lock-out and the reverse lights. It's located on top of the steering column under the dash. Sounds like it's just out of adjustment. To adjust, you put a properly-sized drill bit through the hole in the back to hold it in position, and loosen the screws to move it to align it properly. If you don't have service manuals to describe the procedure, a search on these forums should turn up a few threads with the details.
On the brake lights: sounds to me like a wiring issue related to your turn signal switch installation, but I haven't dug into that wiring on my truck to know how it's set up. I'd suggest looking up the wiring diagrams and tracing the wiring out from the switch to find the problem.
Well, the wiring has to tie together somewhere, considering the same bulbs are used in the rear for brake lights + turn signals. And having looked at the wiring going to the back of the truck, I'm sure that they tie together somewhere inside the cab ... turn signal switch wiring would make sense, both functionally, and since it stopped working after you changed something there.
