If so how are they in the cold with the glow plugs?
The truck is no different.
Do they need to be plugged in? Any info?
Remote starters don't exempt or preclude your truck from needing to be plugged in if the weather demands it. They don't provide heat or insulate your fuel from the cold.
Cold or not, a remote starter just allows you to start your rig from inside your house. Nothing more.
I didnt wanna get one, and have it cranking on my truck when its not going to start easy like a car. Clay you provided good information, and Visseroth i hope thats not right!! Thats Scary.
I don't sell them but I use a Viper 5901 on both of my Powerstokes. I also have the smart start so I can lock, unlock and remote start anywhere I have cell or wifi service. It also lets me know if the alarm is triggered.
I have one on my truck.. unfortunately, during my "no start" issues while installing my Dp Tuner, it doesn't work anymore.. I don't know if I shorted something out during my troubleshooting or what I did. I really liked it though.. When I would hit the button, everything would power up.. the glow plugs would cycle for about 20 seconds & it would fire up. The 1st year, it worked great.. The 2nd winter, i'm not sure what the root of my problem was.. but a lot of the time it wouldn't start on the 1st try & I would need to cycle it again & most times it would start. That year, I put dino oil in.. so I assumed that may have been part of my problem.. but later in the winter.. I found my GPR was going bad also.. so that may have been part of the issue. The starter was on the truck when I bought it & I had no manual & the starter didn't have any marking.. so i couldn't figure out if I could "extend" the pause allowed for the GP cycle.. I know i sure do miss it.. especially now that winter is here.
I have an Avital 5303 remote start with security. I love being able to get up in the morning and start my truck from my bedroom. It cycles the glow plugs for 20 sec each time. Every since i put in synthetic, it fires up first time every time. But it would have to crank twice sometimes before. It has an anti-grind feature and you can set the amount of time it tries to turn the engine over. It has a turbo cool down timer and i can set it to automatically start according to temperature. If i leave for an extended amoutn of time, i can program it to start every 1-3 days and run for 15 min, 30 min, or 1 hr. lots of other options too.
I have heard great things about the Viper. I would love to have the iphone feature, but they wanted too much for my liking. I paid $115 for the system and $125 for installation.
Most systems have a special harness required to disable starting with a manual if it is left in gear.
I have te Clifford alarm system on my truck with the remote start and love it. It waits until the WTS light turns off for the glow plugs before it cranks up. Been plugging my truck up at night recently just so it can warm up the cab a lil quicker but usually don't worry bout it during the warmer months
One thing to look for with remote starters is a two way system; meaning that you push the button to start (one way) then when your truck starts it sends confirmation back (two way). I just have a one way which has horrible range. I am better off most times to just walk to the truck and fire it up. Cheap is not always better.
