Humming/beep sound
Humming/beep sound
Has anyone heard a sound when unlocking doors or opening or closing doors? It sounds like a hum and a beep (i know, real technical). Is it some sort of solenoid firing? Just curious.
Thought of that, but it seems odd to hear it more than once in a short span. I just went out to put something in the truck and I heard when I hit the unlock button and once again when I closed the door. Weird...
I have a similar sound that popped up right after the 10B17 flash. Some of us centered the sound inside the transmission, directly above the pan. If you want to confirm, just craw under the truck with your remote and listen as you unlock the doors. There's a second-long tone coming from inside the trans. Very clear. Perhaps it is a solenoid or valve body? Who knows, but it is a change from the way the truck came from the factory.

I recorded that sound a couple of months ago right after I got the flash. At the time I thought it was linked to opening the door somehow but later found that you can cause the tone just by unlocking the doors. And it is inside the trans for sure. Never have gotten an explanation why it's part of the TCM code now and wasn't before. Still don't know exactly what it is but I know many, many other trucks do it.

Lol, it's just an easy way to communicate. Someone said if a picture is worth a thousand words, a video is worth a million.

The simplest way to observe the sound is to simply stand next to the passenger side door and press the unlock on the key fob. Listen closely and there is a clear one-second tone. If you get adventurous, craw under the truck and press your ear up to the transmission pan. From there you can discern two separate parts of the tone.

Is there any chance the sound could be transmitting through the tranny and originates somewhere else? I haven't been inside a tranny in a while and I wouldn't have thought there would be a lot of electronics inside them. What gets me is the connection to the door... strange to say the least.

I equate the sound coming from mine to the backup buzzer on an electric golf cart but at a distance.
Crawl under the truck? My sales guy told me that at 6'4" I would have no problem walking under the truck!

You can also hear various valves moving a few seconds after the engine shuts down. The EGR valve actuates a good 20 seconds after shut-down likely because it's just a healthy thing to do for an EGR valve. It may prevent soot choking the valve. Regardless, these things don't happen by accident. Some engineer somewhere said it would be good to exercise an element of the drive train so the software engineers figured out a way to do that.
Here's a sample of the EGR valve actuating:
