i bought an engine from a guy in my college class who said it was rebuilt about 4 years ago but sat in his garage since the rebuild. i'm getting the college to put the motor in but it's missing the distributor. the man at the parts store asked if i need an one vac. or a dual vac., i don't know. i know its a '68 302 from a Fairlane/Torino. any info on this year of engine would help. also, in your opinion, would you rebuild a 351m or a 302 for for power and torque and which would be cheaper. need help asap!
Single or dual vacuum? Points maybe... beats me. You don't want points, you want to upgrade.
Rebuild a 351m or 302 for power or torque....
Forget the 351m, you need to convert that to a 400 and do a pretty good rebuild to make real power. A 302 can make power, but it will be at higher and higher revs the more you do to it. (same as most engines)
Single vac is for vacuum advance, dual vacuum provides for retard funtion during starting. Not needed, though either one will fit. A 68 would have had points, but you could go with a Petronics replacement, an electronic setup, Ford Duraspark from say a 77 Bronco, etc. The one posted above is a nice setup. Your choice.
ok, i found out the motor that was in my truck is a 351w. i bought a 302 for my truck and in the process of getting the school to put it in. with the 351w, what would you do to it to make it have some power (500?) and the cheapest way. Stroke it, better heads, over bore...? what are your ideas if you had around $1,500.

Yes... meaning all of the above plus an intake, full exhaust system, and upgraded fuel system, and then you'll need a transmission and rear end to handle the power.

There is no cheap way to 500hp.

Forgetaboutit until you have about $10 G to spend.
The rods are the weak point. Get a good set of H or I beam rods. KB hyperutectic pistons work great if you use a zero gap top ring that is opened wide to accomidate the heat. Then the piston wont crack. A decent cam and RPM airgap intake. Either port your heads and use chevy sized valves, and really open up the exhaust port. Or Ebay a set of some aftermarket heads. 500 is possible if you do the assembly yourself. Don't forget to balance the whole deal. Just buy smart and don't over cam it.
