Hey guys, I'm rebuilding a 302 engine. From a 78 Lincoln Versailles. V8 5.0L carburetored engine. I need some help deciding what to get. Wanting to rebuild the whole thing top to bottom. Camshaft, heads, gaskets and seals, oil pan. you name it. I need yalls help telling me what the best stuff is. want to go aluminum where i can. But im also a college kid so i dont have TOO much to spend. Looking to drop 2000-2500 on the engine. Tell me what youve had luck with. thanks guys.
Didn't Exploder 5.0's around model year 2000 come with some really nice GT40 heads?
I had a couple of Mercury's version of the Exploder's that were loaners and I was pretty impressed with a full throttle punch from 55 mph.
I imagine somebody with more experience than me with these 5.0's can give you better advise on which to use and if their cams and lifters would work well for you.
Hmmm,maybe I'll start checking bone yards near me for a decent miles totalled one from right before they switched to the 4.6.
If you're just looking for a bump in hp, just use the explorer 5liter as is. The 96+ had gt40p heads, which have straighter spark plugs, but flow real nice for being stock.
What are you putting this motor in, what are your goals. The explorer motor is a huge upgrade from the motor you are starting with.
If I'd sold my M4 at the gun show today I was going to order up a complete 5.0 from a 2001 Explorer with 70K miles on it,for $985 delivered to my door with a warranty,been compression tested and run before it was pulled.From a reputable bone yard.All of the goodies still on it too.
I wonder how many horses my stock 1994 5.0 has and I think the 2001 has around 215 hp.I could probably easily get 250 or more conservatively with a nice increase in torque with a fairly mild cam,headers,and either lose my cats or some actual high flow cats with an h-pipe and true duals.
Did the 2000 & 2001's have factory roller lifters?
