Trying the DSII conversion...

And I have everything on, coil (junk yard) and new coil wire, Ign. Mod (junk yard), dizy (new), wiring harness (member of this site sent me one), and new carb from a 1981. I have it all on and hooked up according to directions from this site and I am not getting any fire. I checked the coil with the volt meter and it appears to be working correctly. I had the Ign. Mod checked at Auto Zone before I put it on and it was fine. Any ideas on what I need to check?

Vehicle in question is a 1985 Bronco with the I6.

Hi Arkdriver,
Is it turning over and just not firing?

The first things I'd check:
Double check for any vacuum lines not hooked up or plugged up.

Your timing isn't 180° out. Meaning you have the distributor in backwards, usually happens when everything's lined up when the #1 cylinder is brought up to TDC on the exhaust stroke instead of the compression stroke.

All the plugs in the wiring harness are all fully plugged together and that you didn't miss one. I usually miss the one that plugs into the distributor since it's lower and out of sight.

Lastly, have you checked that the carb is getting gas? Is the choke on the carb fully closed? Did that once on mine when mine wouldn't start with my old 1bbl. Struggled with the ignition for a good hour until I realized the choke was 100% closed and it wasn't getting any air.

Connect a test light from the TACH TEST (negative side) of the coil to clean, unpainted metal on the engine. Keep the coil connected for this test. Crank the engine over from the cab using the key, and the light should BLINK. Report your results.

When I first did it, It wouldn't fire. I had the Ignition timing retarded too far. Wouldn't start until the timing was adjusted.

Then, I pulled the wiring harness out, re-taped it, and put it back in. And when I did, it would turn over and over and over, but wouldn't start. Fearing that I had messed something up, I went and checked everything. Turns out, I didn't have the harness connected to the coil securely. Connected it right, and it fired right up.

So, adjust your ignition timing. See if it helps. And then be sure that everything's hooked up right. When you push the half-moon shaped plastic piece onto the coil, you should hear it snap when it pops into place. If it didn't snap, you may have not hooked it up properly.

If neither of those help, try what AB and fmc400 have suggested.

OK figured it out. It was the wiring harness. We rigged it up to where it was working and it started. The harness is in bad shape so I just got back from Home Depot with new wire to rebuild the harness. Also have a little carb issue. I think the float is messed up, but the stock carb I tool off has a lot of the same parts so I'm going to rebuild the 1981 carb that is on there now with a lot of the parts from the stock, 1985 carb to see if I can make one good carb. Shouldn't be much of a problem to do. Anyway, once I get that done and the harness rebuilt, I should be in business. I went ahead and put a new coil and a new ignition module on the truck too since they are pretty cheap and will make me feel better having the new parts vs junk yard parts.

Do ya'll know where you can get some new plugs that are on the harness? I remember seeing the part number on here before, but don't remember what thread they were in. Thanks

I got one connector from O'Reilly's the 4 pin that plugs to the module.
BWD Part Number PT5619. This is also availble at Autozone, Duralast Part number 480. AutoZone was $2.00 cheaper.

The 2 pin Female plug on the truck harness is avalible at Autozone, and O'Reilly Part number unknown since I didn't need one.

The Coil connector I got from Autozone. Duralast Part Number 252.

The 3 pin that goes to the dizzy. is nowhere to be found. Use the one from your old harness if it is in good shape. I used a 4 pin trailer light connector and cut the plug off the dizzy.

I soldered all my splices and put shrink tubing on them.

NAPA numbers are ECH EC72-3, ECH EC127-4 for the 3 and 4 pin connectors. The EC72-3 goes to distributor plug.

Ok so we went to the junk yard and got some new connectors and made a new harness. We are all good there. Now the problem is the carb. Got it from the junk yard and tore it down and rebuilt it a few months ago when I started with the DSII conversion. When trying to start the truck, the carb was leaking from the gasket so I tore it down again and found what I thought was the problem then and rebuilt that part again. No more leaking from the top gasket...but it's leaking gas from the throttle plate now. So, I think the carb is bad that I got. So, someone tell me what carb (model number etc.) I need to get and where a good place is to get one for a good price. Our junk yard doesn't have anymore. Thanks guys.

And all of you on this site that said it was a 45 minute job when you did the DSII conversion and your truck fired right up...count your blessings!!!

Thanks!

Jared

Wow, sorry to hear about things being so frustrating!

Glad you got the DSII conversion done though. That's awesome.

The carb is leaking from the throttle plate? I may be missing something, but I can't think of anything that could be bad on the carb itself that would cause leaking from there. Most everything that would cause that would be something like a bad or mis-adjusted float, bad accelerator pump, stuck fuel inlet needle/seat, etc. All stuff that can either be cleaned, adjusted, or come in a rebuild kit.

Yep, throttle plate around the gasket. Wasn't leaking there before. I've rebuilt it twice now. Maybe I need to let a buddy look at it (rebuild it) ha. Maybe I don't know what I'm doing.

Another question I had, what are ya'lls idle Air fuel adjustment screw and your fast idle adjustment screw set at? How many turns in and/or
out? And also, what is the vac port that is on the front of the carb (when mounted on the truck, the front side, towards the grille). The fuel line/filter is on the top left when look at it from the front of the truck, but what is the large vac port on the top right about the same height as where the fuel line goes? I've seen some pics of carbs with this vac port, and some without so just wondering. Thanks!
