There is a hook looking thing coming off the cable divider / splitter under the driver door any body know where the hook goes or what its purpose is. parking brakes don't seem to be working rite and with a manual trany they are needed. I'll try sending a pic. Can't figure out how to send attachments or pics thanks
Don't think i need one just wondering where or what the hook thing connected to it dose. The picture #9 doesn't show the hook but thats the part. Also what dose it take to send pics on this thing?. thanks
That part is the parking brake automatic adjuster. My understanding is that part will straighten out over time to prevent the cables from stretching, which is a more expensive and complicated repair. IMHO, it looks like yours may be bent. You may want to replace the entire part (#9 in the LMC Catalog as previously noted) It will make more sense when you see the new part. I would also recommend an inspection of all the cables and brake parts to make sure they work before you order your parts. There is an initial adjustment of that nut on the threaded rod, but a good soak in penetration fluid would be in order!
Forget about the hook, it's not your problem. One thing that doesn't look right is the bar that distributes the pressure to both cables. It should not be ****-eyed like that.
The first thing you probably need to do is replace both cables. They are cheap, and they are a common failure point on these trucks. They get rusted and stuck.
About the hook thing. I am not sure what it does, but when I go to adjust the tension, it has never failed yet, I always twist the rod in two. Each and every time I just get a piece of all-thread and make a new piece, that does not have the hook on it at all.
the bottom cable in your pic is sticking. You shouldnt need to adjust the adjuster nut in the picture. Adjust the rear brakes at the adjuster wheels to where you have some drag on the rear brakes and your e brake should function properly
I guess that hook thing is what chiltons is calling a tension limiter and gets straightened out with too much tension.
Thanks again Ctubutis i'm going to try and make mine look like yours.
It looks like the Rear cables need replacing. Either one of them is stuck, or it's stretched. Might as well replace the rear brake shoes and springs while you are at it.
The "Hook" is the automatic cable tensioner. When you get new rear cables installed, adjust your rear brakes to where they just start to drag using the "star" located behind the rubber plugs of the brake drum backing plate.
Then, adjust the brake cable tension, by placing the parking brake pedal to the floor, then using that nut on the "hook" untill it just starts to deform the hook. You will see it start to move slightly. Once it starts to move slightly, stop, as the correct tension is met. When the "hook" stretches all the way flat to it's stop, it needs to be replaced with a new one. You have pleanty of adjustment left.
Thanks 81-f-150 and Ctubuts thats the info i was needing. Hopefully the rear brakes have all the parts in there so just cables and brake shoes need replacing
