Replace the Brake hardware at the same time, they have brake hardware kits for a little extra money and are well worth it. This will include the springs etc, as these can get stretched with age...
Also check the small cable (forget what its called) connected to the brake shoes as this gets damaged as well and should be replaced.
Also use some hi temp anti seize lubricant on the brake shoe pivot areas where it rides on the backing plate.
Then check the wheel cylinders for leaks, which should be obvious etc...
Other than all that once you get it fixed it should be good to go, and the parking brake should work again.
Ok i ordered brake cables ,clips from lmc $40.00 w/ shipping . will replace shoes from local napa. Also ordered fuel sending unit $69.00 these trucks will nickel and dime you to death. Probably cheaper and easer to work on than A new truck. Eventually i'll get it in shape with ya"alls help and time & $$ permitting .
Thanks for the responses everyone.

IMHO if brake cables & sending units need to be replaced every 30 years,
that's a pretty good lifespan.
I try to buy stuff from Rock Auto (RockAuto Auto Parts) when I can; not only are
they a sponsor here but they're a family-owned business (important to me) that
offers parts in a range of price & quality points, all at decent prices.
I guarantee they you can't do more on a 99+ rig. Even with my 95 Dodge I can't work on injectors etc. However, a carb I have a shot in hell at rebuilding it.

Also, their shipping (international in my case) costs are much more reasonable than some other suppliers.......& always fast
ok obviously this isn't my picture but i didn't feel like going outside in the rain and talking a picture of the same exact thing. my blot broke at the nut. can you buy just that part for somewhere? i don't need the whole assembly just the nut and bolt part.
How much would a almost new 85 4wd cost in parts nowadays.
To build one from scratch with all brand new parts, including body, drivetrain, etc..? The same as it would cost to buy a brand new one. plus or minus $30,000.
To rebuild one using a frame off restoration, using rebuilt parts, and doing bodywork, paint, and interior restoration to where it looked mint? $10,000 to $20,000 depending on state the truck was in.
My 1981 F-150 cost $7500 when brand new. Adjust that for inflation that's about $18,046.
My 1973 F-100 cost $3200. Adjust that to inflation, $15,762.
Got a late start it has to be above 40 for me to function. three hrs to get the cables into the brakes. I'll hook up the front adjustment parts tomorrow when it gets above 40. All looked good inside the brake's plenty of shoe's left.
thanks
