Have a 2004 F150. When turning on the 4x4 ( in nutral with the brake paddle down) 4x4 lights on the dash goes on but nothing happens don't feel anything clicking in. Sometimes the 4x4 low/hi lights on the dashboard don't go on at all. Is this a 4x4 switch. Can somebody give some advise on what to do. Thx for your time.
Trying moving just a bit. When you switch to 4hi you don't need to be in neutral this is only done for 4low. Sometimes you won't here it switch until you move a bit.
Likely the shifter motor is seized up. Its on the outside of the case, and tap it easily with a mallet. Then once it works, engage 4 hi at least twice a month and this will not happen again!
If it is the old style f150 you might have a front axle shift fork issue. The transfercase shift motor has a sensor that tells you that power is going to the front differential. On the front axle check to see if there is a vacuum motor on the right side of the 'axle tube', this was a common problem. the plastic sliders inside the on the locking collar of the splined axle shaft would wear out. If you have this vacuum motor on the front axle.... time to pull the front diff.
