My engine light came on so I had the local big chain auto repair shop look at it. The repair shop told me the catalytic converter is bad and needs to be replaced. I about fell over when they told me it cost $1600 for replacing just one. WTF, it’s a catalytic converter, I think to whole exhaust system is cheaper than $1600. Does anyone have any ideas; can replace the entire exhaust system for the same cost?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
I do seem to remember that Ford has had to "back order" a buttload of Cats.Supposedly their prime manufacturer has shut down. This may play into your situation. With that being said, definately have an afttermarket cat welded in.
That amount of money is rediculos, even IF OEM converters are scarce.
Ford,s converter supply situation may have changed, but Ive heard nothing to confirm it.Lastly...whatever "big chain" it was that quoted you that price I believe needs a reality check.Dont know what color the sky is in their world, but it aint blue.
I also think you need to get a second opinion.....my.02
I both one rear cat for 60$ at ebay. Only reason that I didn't install it so far is that I'm in MN weather. I will not weld then use band clamps. For me band clamps work well, I used it at flex pipe of my Acura. Cat is Magnaflow.
If you aren't in an emissions state you could eliminate them for well under $500 but no muffler shop will totally remove them they could only replace with an offroad cat which will run less than $200ea.
Just the light coming on would make me wonder if it is just a bad O2 sensor, if the cat was plugged the truck wouldn't run right, if the cat quit cleaning correctly the it still may run right and not be a problem until it clogs. The actual codes would go a long way in helping.
You have not given the code/s read to even suspect a cat issue.
To consider a bad cat either side, the code would have to be either or both a P0420/430.
Or an engine power issue due to a plugged cat/s.
What do you have?
EPA requires cats and O2s last 80K to 100K miles depending on year and model. It might be under warranty even if the powertrain no longer is. If you had a real bad misfire(CEL lite FLASHING) this will destroy the cat. Raw fuel is NOT good cat food. Your cat will die on a diet of raw fuel due to a misfire. Don't drive very far if the CEL is FLASHING. As was mentioned you have P0420 or 430 which means your cat effiency is too low. This doen't happen by itself. You have to drive the vehicle for a couple of months with a bad misfire to kill the cat. Most customers don't want to admit they've been driving with the CEL flashing, but the ones that do admit it say it's been flashing for a couple of months so this isn't something you found out about yesterday. If you don't fix the misfire and just replace the cat you'll be buying second cat in a few months because the cat is only the symptom NOT the real problem. Fix your misfire first then buy a new cat.
Thanks for the info. I had the misfire issue problem about a year ago. I drove with the CEL on and in one case flashing and now about a year later my catalytic converter is bad. No codes are produced but if you hit the catalytic converter with your hand you can hear the parts rattling loose inside. Thanks for the insight.

If you're hearing things rattle in the cat...it's DONE.
Agreed with others who mention to...go to a smaller muffler shop and get the weld in replacements, much more economical.
best also to make sure you don't have the misfire issue anymore too,
