Just finished installing a msd6a box ,blaster coil, and a msd billet distributor-351w-1992 bronco with a superchip and a kand n fipk.Regapped plugs@.050.What a difference this makes ,now i cant compete with a zr1 but its a difference on getting out of the hole and top end .(mid range also)IF ITS FORD U CANT GO WRONG TR
I have installed a number of aftermarket performance parts and have not really seen much of an improvement to the gas mileage that they all were supposed to, on my 95 5.0L. I install the Msd 6a box, MSD Coil, taylor wires with platnum 4 plugs along with msd cap and rotor, K&N FIPK, Gibson high-flow cat back, even a new bosch O2 sensor, and I still only average about 12mpg with highway use included. It may have to do with the 140k + miles, but I thought it would improve atleast a little. Even thought it did not, I am happy with the performance and that to me is more important then gas mileage
I have done almost every mode one could do with the engine. NO headers or chip/programmer yet.
I had the engine rebuilt last year. Bored 0.30 over with mild Edelbrock cam & lifters. I then added the Edelbrock upper & lower manifolds, Edelbrock/BBK throttle body, K & N filter system, and electric fan(no clutch driven type mounted on water pump), MSD coil, and flowmaster after cat exhaust
My average mph is anywhere from 11.5 to 13 mile per gallon. But the power gains were very impressive. Putting my head in the back seat when I step on it.
At some point I will add headers and the msd6a box. I am also considering a chip or programmer, not sure yet which one.
Will let you know what my mileage is at the end of the week average for me has been 14-15 back road ,not interstate driving 60mph average, pulling my trailer interstate 11-12 and thats at 75 average. Mileage has alot to do with how ya drive ,i know u stay into it gas gauge moves more than my speedo - TR
I am looking into headers and a chip, but I don't know what headers I would get. I was considering the stainless ones, but they cost quite a bit more than the others. Does anyone have headers that aren't stainless, how do you like them? I thought that they would prolly look good until you run it, then they turn the rust color. I look at truck performance.com and I am considering the performance "offroad only" y Pipe that is stainless and does not have a cat. The cat robs alot of power and I think combining that with headers would be a dramatic change. Since they usually won't run that great without a cat, they also sell a chip that requires the removal of the cat. This way it will all be set up how it is supposed to be. I realize it is for offroad use only, but unless you are in an area that actually does emission testing you would be fine, especially because if you look at the pic of the Y pipe, it looks like it has a cat anyways. I just thought that would be an ultimate power gain, just can't decide what to do about the headers
I recently had the large rear cat removed and it cleaned up plenty of "bogging" issues with my engine but not all of them. I had a Flowmaster installed and my duals (that had broken at the Y) reconnected.
A few weeks later, I had my exhaust guy cut out the front small cat and install a resonator to give me some back pressure. This gave me even better results in the bogging area. I now have virtually no back pressure and with the resonator and flowmaster, it is not so loud that it wakes up the neighborhood when I start it up (just when I step on it).
I also noticed a drastic change in mileage now. Not sure what I got before (was bad) and now it is some better.
If you gut or cut out the cats, make sure you know someone who will pass it for you when you get it inspected.
I bet those mods did make a big difference. I just added a new MSD Blaster Coil and distributor cap and it made a difference in throttle response on my '95 Bronco. I wish I had the money to do the whole thing but I just put new tires and wheels on so I have to build back up. I love bolt on performance parts!!!!
I was talking with some racing friends of mine and they infromed me that there are NO inexpensive mods that can be done to a 302 to really boost performance (unlike Chevy 305 or 350). The direct quote was "Go Big or Don't Go At All."
I personally want solid and reliable performace. Eliminating the CAT's and fixing my exhaust has given me some of that. Next is working on the intake. Does anyone know anything about the throttle body spacers, etc. from JC Whitney?
If anyone has some inexpensive mods that they have done, let me know.
I purchased a Helix PowerTower from Summit and really didn't like the quality of it. The aluminum was pitted so I sent it back. I was told by some board members that they are a waste of money. They're also suppose to make a high pitched whine when going down the road. Remember, this is second hand info as I didn't install mine.
