Very loud cold start
My wife called freaked out earlier today. She started the truck after it was plugged in for 2 hours and said that it was so loud, she shut it off. She said it sounded like no oil was in there. I told her to start it with me on the phone and it was loud as hell, but the high idle kicked in and it smoothed out just fine.
It was in the single digits last night and today it was 20 out. What would cause this?

5 40
I changed from dyno 15/40 to syn 5/40 for the winter for very similar reasons, anything below 20 my truck hates life on dino. -15 it will start without being plugged in and run well on syn. i run the dino all year except when the mercury plumets, in my case nov - apr roughly, and with the miles i put on, one syn dose covers the bad part of the year, then back to dino.
on edit: i remeber you saying your truck ate syn oil, mine does too, never need to add on dino, but needed to add 3 quarts over 6k on syn last winter, wierd.........

Jason, listen to me on this one, OK, ok. If you can get a hold of some Schaeefers 15w-40 synthetic BLEND oil. Its the 7000, the 9000 fully synthetic you don't want, you want the 7000 15-40 blend. It the smoothest oil I've ran, got a load of it downstairs waiting for a couple thousand miles of the Chevron Delo. The delo is another story but google Schaeefers oil dealers in Boisie Idaho and see wht you get and post up your search results so we can define. I got a place about 9 miles away and hes about close to what I pay at the stores but this oil is the chit, period. Here, found the link http://www.schaefferoil.com/ and heres another http://www.schaefferoil.com/supreme_7000.html

I've heard a romping PSD before and it wasn't romping. Last winter I started the truck in well below zero weather when running dino oil. It was loud.
I've been running the 6637 for ~30k miles.
The Schaeffers rep here is Tony and he's a good guy even though he runs a Chevy truck. I've run Schaeffers 9000 before and switched to Delo 400LE. I'd be willing to give Schaeffers 7000 a try. The truck ran great with the 9000, but it seemed to increase the turbo pedestal leak and I really had to watch the oil level. Does the synthetic blend stay quite a bit thinner in the cold than dino?
I'll check the fuel filter since it's due for an oil change, but it only has ~5k on it.
