The wife drove the Excursion (V10) to work today and it ran normal and didn't have any loud noises coming from under the hood. When she started the engine to return home it immediately started knocking. This is not a ping, but a knock. Not a loud heavy knock, but much louder than a ping. It has a fast frequency, seems too fast to be a rod knocking. The frequency is similar to a valve issue, but the knock seems to be too heavy for lifters. Any ideas? Anyone else out there had this problem.
PS - Oil looks good. Just changed out 2 weeks ago. Truck is driven everyday.
I have a similar issue, Mine started knocking, but running just fine. Replaced all the lashers(lifters), problem persists. Got a stethoscope($8 at Harbor Freight) and figured out it's @ the number one cyclinder, but behind the timing chain. Haven't figured it out yet, it seems to come and go. Crappy thing is it started about 1200 miles after I rebuilt the engine(I reused most of the valvetrain parts.). I will probably get in there and replace the rockers sometime soon, but it's not effecting compression or gas mileage, just annoying.
What year? What type of oil filter? If it's a Fram it has most likely collapsed as they are known for it... the media isn't reinforced like it should be, it collapses which restricts oil flow.
The possibility is also there you have an exhaust leak - check the manifold bolts on both sides and see how everything looks.
Wow! Thanks for all the quick responses. Please don't judge me too bad, but, we were in a rush to make a quick trip to the mountains, and we had wally world to replace the oil and filter. They said they were using a high mileage oil, but didn't say what type of filter they used. That will be the first thing I check tomorrow.
Second thing will be the exhaust manifold bolts.
Guys, could it be a stuck or colasped lifter?
The Excursion is a 2000 and it has a V10, 6.8 liter engine.

Ok I know this one. Just had it happen to me the other day.
You have a plug fixing to blow. I was on I 10 east bound and had the same noise could not figure it out. Hit the gas to get up to freeway speed on the onramp and # 7 plug popped out. cost me $350 bucks(helicoil, drill and tap and new plug and cop) but after it was done the noise was gone.

Start trying to figure out which one has blown by and then get it fixed.

Wow.. Pop a plug.. That sucks I heard this happens, any years this happens to and what causes this?
It's the ignition coils and spark plugs. Mine did the same thing; it's not a knock, it's a misfire. Caulk the wiper cowling under the hood (its a 2-part split wiper cowling that leaks) before you change the coils, because otherwise water will leak on the new coils and ruin them too. I changed all my plugs and coils and caulked the cowling and the misfire is gone
