Hey folks,
Dad gave me an 87 ranger 7 months ago. After correcting a few transmission issues, and complete head job my truck was running great. Drove her the last two weeks, then she sat over thanksgiving. Today I took her out around the city and noticed a slight ticking sound. The noise progressed over 50 miles of driving. I finally decided to take her home. My mechanical knowledge is minimal, and need to know where to start troubleshooting. My wife says she heard a loud ticking noise right before she blew the head gasket a few months ago ( this makes me even more concerned) could this have anything to do with the late cracked head gasket issue?
Use a length of hose or tubing as a stethoscope, one end to your ear, the other end on the noise suspect & have a listen to locate the culprit & post your findings. Could be something as simple as a sticking valve.
Thanks guys. I read about exhaust leak, spark plug and valve possibilities last night. I'll locate the area noise is coming from, assess the situation and act accordingly if it's one of these simple things.
