So I finally got my ball joints done, replaced the needle bearings, axle stubs, and all the seals and o'rings according to guzzle's site. I got it all back together and was hoping to drive it. When I took it out for a test the front wheels started wobbeling and when I put it in 4 wheel drive there is a knock. Any suggestions on what I could have missed or what I might have done wrong? I'm baffled!
Not sure about the wobbling, but the knock in 4x4 could be the grease zerks in the upper ball joints. The zerks that came with my Moog ball joints were too big so I got some lower profile ones that just barely clear.
I'll look into that. I actually had to cut the bolt flush with the castle nut on my lower ball joint so it didn't hit the u joints. I have the moogs also. I also don't think its the death wobble that people talk about because they wobble no matter what speed I'm going.
I also noticed that my driver side hub sticks out a little past the plastic guard that goes around the hub and covers the bolts and on the passenger side it sits a little inside that guard.
Not good - should be the same on both sides. Not sure which side is wrong - I have aftermarket wheels so I can't tell you where the end of the hub should be on stock wheels. Sounds like something is seriously out of whack. I'd be careful driving it until you figure it out.
If your axle wasn't in all the way when you installed the 4x4 hub I would not think that you could have got the retaining clip in the correct position. I am in the same process as you are and it is taking me an unbelieveable amount of time.
That's what I thought also. Everything went back together smoothly but neither of these problems were there before I took the axle apart. At least if they were it wasn't like this.
I was thinking about your problem last night and could it be the snap ring on the axle isn't fully seated? And not to insult you but the lugnuts are tighten down to specs? Because that right there would cause wobbling and some bad noise. Let us know what you find out cause I am afraid it won't go back together for me.
Rpex, sorry that we couldn't be of more help. I was able to finish my ball joint job today. I was lucky enough to not have any wobbles when I took it for the test drive. I was real concerned with the passenger axle seating in all the way. i hope it's something quick and easy for you to fix. Do you know what side it is that seems off?
