I'm working on one for my van due to how tight the underhood (underdash?) area is, but I'm kinda shut down for the winter now. Basically, I'm cutting the carb mount area off a stock 1BBL intake, cutting open the outer side out to the second set of cylinders, and then welding on a new plate drilled and tapped to take a 2BBL carb with EGR. Welding rod for cast iron isn't cheap though, I spent $20 on a one pound package, plus you have to anchor it down so it doesn't warp too much, preheat and postheat to prevent cracking, and still have it milled to make it seal properly.
I agree with your idea about adapting a 2bbl to the OE manifold. I too am not all the taken with the Offy intake and beside that, the price, whether new or used is high. I'm not looking to build a race truck, but would like a 2bbl for those occasions when something is needed for X-reason. Hope you can work something out. It may just be that others have similar interests.
They are pretty rare, but Edelbrock made a 1 bbl intake for the 300. It kept the stock YF mounting flange and even bolted up to the exhaust manifold just like stock, so the carb was in the exact same location as stock. The advantage to this was that it had six individual runners coming together at the plenum. This manifold, being aluminum, would be a lot easier to cut and weld to accept a 2 bbl, plus the individual runners would probably perform a lot better than the log intake. Unfortunately, because they are rare, they tend to be pricey. I have seen them sell for about the same as a used Offy or Clifford. I search ebay for 300 intakes pretty regularly, and I have only seen one of them for sale in more than a year.
