I just replaced my front rotors and calipers, pads of course on my 99 expedition 4wd.
I now have a very soft pedal......like it goes way down there when it's running. ON the first pump when it's not running the pedal will go to the floor, but pump up after several pumps but not all the way to the top. I have bled and re-bled the system(all four wheels). Does not appear to be any air......but sure feels like a lot of it by the pedal. Ideas please!!
PS....what kind of idiot design those stupid torx head bolts for the calipers anyway?!!!
I'm sure there's still air in the new calipers. Bleed them once again, but this time rap on the calipers while you're doing it. The vibration will cause the air bubbles that are clinging to the insides of the caliper to break loose and rise up to the bleed screw.
Thanks, will do. I can't see anything else that could be wrong really!
I've done lots of brakes in my 52 years!
And as a matter of fact the new caliper I put on has the bleed screw at the bottom instead of the top??? Don't get that one??
Well I only replaced the left side. I guess I boils have been the wrong one now that u mention it I didn't get the box asvghey kept it to put the core in. I think o will check with them tomorrow. Should still bleed out no??
I wouldn't waste the time or the brake fluid until you can confirm the correct caliper is in there. With the bleed screw on the bottom, there has to be an air pocket in the caliper that will never come out.
So I will take it off and exchange tomorrow. I'll report after that. I guess it does make sense that air will stay in the top. And instead of the fluid on top moving the piston there is an air cushion at all times. That very strange but likely what happening I guess.
My guess would be that the parts store either sold you the wrong side caliper or it was boxed wrong. Whatever the case the bleeder screw MUST be on the top.
