I just received a cool set of train horns as a gift. The instructions say that the compressor must be mounted away from the elements and in a cool space. It looks like it has to go under the rear seat. Any advice or input would be appreciated. LEO
My brother just had a set of train horns installed on his truck. The compressor was mounted on the firewall on drivers side and the horns mounted under the bed.
my tank and compressor are tucked behind my back seat... tight fit but they fit. what kind of system do you have ? and getting from the inside to the outside of the trucks usually isn't a problem, you just have to look around for grommets and other ways out.
Are there any decent sounding electric horns out there? My horn sounds like a Jetta...I rarely use it...even in need. I'd really like a bull horn on it, ha.
Most compressors will tolerate frame mounting, though they will suggest a remote pickup point so it doesn't suck in moisture.
Couple of thoughts on mounting, most compressors (if not all):
* are noisy and vibrate a fair amount, so inside the cab may not be ideal depending on how often it cycles and how tolerant you are.
* make heat, lots of heat, so it needs clearance both for its own cooling and so it doesn't burn/melt adjacent surfaces.
* can be mounted in any orientation except upside down. It obviously can be mounted upside down, but the effectiveness of the head's cooling fins are greatly reduced. Though some have external cooling fans that make this a moot point.
I mounted my dual Viair compressors in my bed's tool box. Going down the road with the stereo at an old man's level (that's me) I can barely hear it. My compressors are fast, but generate a lot of heat, so they have their own blocked off area in the tool box; can circulate the air throughout the box; and have two muffin fans cooling them (one blowing / one sucking).
Not claiming to be an expert, just my opinions.
Need pics and a sound clip when you finish. I can't believe how fun these are and I don't even use them to scare people, unless they peg the idiot meter.
