I have been working with a local dealer here in DFW on a deal to trade in my 2007 F-350 on a 2011 F-350. Last weekend we finally came to an agreement in writing on the price of the new truck, and a verbal agreement on my trade (I still needed to clean my truck out and grab the title, so they didn't put the trade in value in writing yet).
Go in there yesterday to sign all the paperwork. Salesman takes my title and disappears for like 30 minutes, then comes back with the sales manager (I know this can't be good). He's saying the GM of the dealership didn't realize last weekend that my truck was a manual transmission, so there was no way they could give me anything close to what they said they would.
Keep in mind the salesman and GM has had my VIN# for almost 2 weeks now, and they drove and inspected the truck last weekend while the GM was at the dealership. Now he's saying he didn't realize my truck was a stick....and he wasn't even at the dealership yesterday morning. Talk about a disappointment!
Thanks for letting me rant! Now I get to start this whole process all over again with another dealer! Someday I'm going to get this awesome truck!
When I traded my 05 F-150 in on my 250 I kinda had to do the same thing with the whole cleaning it out (removing stereo equipment). As I was pulling out of the dealership to head home the sales guy came out to hand me back my proof of insurance. He looked at the truck and was like this isn't 4wd? I said nope and pulled away. Came in the next day to purchase it but they didn't try to adjust the #'s on me.
IMO you may want to consider going go by Carmax or someplace similar, with the truck cleaned up, etc. They will give you an offer whether or not you purchase a vehicle from them. Compare it to what the dealer is proposing and sell to the highest "bidder".
Seeing as you are in the DFW market, I would pick another dealer --- just because you are already being jerked around.
Take all of that with a grain of salt because I have had vehicles transferred from a dealer near me to one 50 miles (or more) away because I did not like the sales process. Didn't want the salesman getting the commission.
This is the exact reason I never bring a trade to the discussion. Sure, I agree they need to make some money off the trade but it always seems to muddy the waters during the negotiations. Sorry to hear you got caught up in it.
I tried the trade first just because I thought it would be easier. I left the dealership yesterday and straight by Carmax and thought the offer was reasonable. I have contacted a few other dealers about just buying the new truck outright (no trade). If I get a good deal on the new truck, I will sell to Carmax.
"Hi there, I drove your truck but I didn't realize it was a manual."
Oh really? Nice working with you...lol.
Anywyas, good luck on your hunt for a reasonable dealer.
Our largest dealer around here has the no hassle deals.
I'm not sure it's a cheaper route but it sure makes the process less difficult.
(I'm still waiting on a call back from the smaller local negotiating type dealer since February!)
Since you're in DFW I'll throw out another recommendation for Bill Utter Ford in Denton. That's where I bought mine and I had a great experience. They have a few SDs on the lot, but can sell from the inventory of about 6 other dealers within 50 miles. I never once felt pressured or screwed around.
As others have said, you really should try to sell your current truck privately before going to CarMax or trading it in. You will almost definitely get more for it.
