Had a problem starting my F450 today. It started OK in the morning went to my first job any went to restart and it was fine.Went to the next job and went to restart and no luck. After numorous times it finally started.I released the drain lever on the fuel housing to see if fuel would come out and it did before it started. Now if I go to start it it will start hard.Any thoughts. Thanks in Advance David
David! First off Welcome to FTE! You will learn a lot here and be helped. Give use a little more info. Mileage, white smoke while cranking, how long it sat between restarts? check engine light on? There could be a number of problem.
Thank you for the Welcome. There is no smoke and no lights or codes.I have had the truck since 97,it is a 95.It has never been in the shop I have fixed everything on my own.I have logged everything I have ever done to it.This one is realy bugging me.Almost seems like fuel.Forgot ,just turned 130000
Welcome to FTE!
How many miles? How old are the glow plugs? Check the fuel pressure at the schrader valve on the side of the FPR with an old tire pressure gauge at idle. Let us know what that is. When was the last time you had the oil changed? Seems like a lot of info, but it will help us help you.
130000 Glow plugs are 7 years old but only use them at first start up in morning,in summer do not even use them. Before today it cranked right over.Change the oil every 2000 miles and that is no lie.

When you say you only use them at first start, do you have them on a switch?

Yes burnt 2 harneses,so 7 years ago I wired in a kill on the dash.Changed valve cover gaskets wires under valve cover that lead to injectors complete motor wire harness.Been fine ever since,no problems.I believe it was the start and stop 25 to 30 times per day.
Cam Position Sensor. Known to go out on these trucks a lot. Should always have a spare in the glove box, that's how common it is. It causes no start, does the tach move when cranking and no start? If not cps for sure, if so, I'd change it anyway to check, heard of tach working before while cranking and it still was the cps.
It's on the front of the motor, about 10 oclock position above the balancer. One 10mm bolt and unplug it and pull it out. Get one from ford or IH, better that parts store ones. Part numbers are:
FORD F4TZ-12K073-C
IH 1876736C91
I'd start with that for sure.
On edit: only 25 bucks or so too. When mine went out it worked once in a while, kinda like you're saying.

I have changed the CPS 4 times since I have owned it.It always died while driving never problem with startup!!!I keep one on the shelf I will try that today.
Well I used the 450 today and this is what I have to report.Yesterday I changed the CPS and did a preasure test on the fuel pump at the schrader valve and that was 67 psi. This morning it started right up,no problems. After the first job which took about an hour again started no problems.Second job took about a hour and a half had to crank it 4 times to get it started, and started hard.Runs perfect when started. The rest of the day it took 2 to 4 cranks to get it started. This is realy bugging me because I know she is not right.Have had the truck 14 years so I know her in and out LOL. Any other ideas boys. Thanks David
