Hey all..... I have a 1979 F150 Ranger 4x4 that is having problems.... Once she starts and I change gears from park to drive or park to reverse it seems like it looses fuel... I have to hit the gas just right when I feel it start to go. This also happens when I come to a complete stop or slow down, when I attempt to give it gas again I feel her starting to lose power, sometimes she does. Anyhow. Ive had several people on here and at work tell me it could possibly be the accellerator pump. Ive called all around where I live and am unable to find an autoparts store that carries one. This weekend Im going to get some carb cleaner as well as get a new fuel filter. My question is if these two little fixes dont work where do you suggest that I get an accelerator pump.... Sorry, didnt mean for the post to be so long.....Thanks... J
I don't know if that's your particular problem, but a new accelerator pump diaphragm will come in a $20 carb kit. I'm not sure if you can purchase one separately or not??
I may be mistaken, but it seems like the accelerator pump would only come into play when you press the accelerator, wouldn't have anything to do with it otherwise.
Thanks for the pointers guys.. So this morning I went and picked up a fuel filter and some carb cleaner... Did the trick. Again, appreciate it. I love it how these old trucks just keep on going and for just a $3.00 part
Just an FYI sometimes you have to be careful with carb cleaner. Sometimes it can just knock stuff loose and make the problem worse eventually. Just keep an eye on it, if it acts up again you'll be much better off getting a rebuild get and actually taking the carb apart and cleaning it that way.
yeah... immedaitly iyt was awesome.... thought the problem was the carb and that the carb cleaner did the trick.... lookslike i might just beed a rebuild on the carb..... its starting ti act up again the nect day.;.... how much does something like that cost... thanks.. appreciate it
The gallon can of carb cleaner is usually about $20, a good carb kit can be another $20 or so. Figure in other minor items like the base gasket, spacer-to-manifold gasket if necessary, fuel filter, a couple cans of spray, and it's still under $75 tops.
