headlight switch

the dash lights work on my truck when the dimmer switch is in one position only and they are not that bright. if i move it to far to the right or left they go out. i know that the dimmer control is part of the headlight switch. so my question is this. is that normal or is the switch bad and should i replace it? the year of my truck is a 73 350.

You might want to just clean up all the contacts on your dash lights. Mine hardly worked at all and the dimmer switch wasn't a problem at all, rather it was corrosion and such on all the terminals. I cleaned them all up with some contact cleaner, and now they are fairly bright. Not like a new car by any means but bright enough to get the job done.

This is a common problem with old headlight switches. This happens because the wiper inside the switch loses contact with the rheostat coil, either because of corrosion, or the wiper is physically bent. If contact cleaner doesn't fix the issue or it cannot be re-positioned, a new switch is relatively inexpensive and will solve the problem.

I changed mine out today, 1973 F100. The corrosion was evident and the gap [i.e. making contact or non-contact too]. Changing out was relatively easy and worth the time and money
