hi i have a 2000 ford expy 4.6 i took it to my mechanic and he told me that the upper and lower balljoints are shot. he said that for the upper balljoints he has to order the control arm with it. i was wondering if this is true or not.
What he is telling you is true. You can buy an upper arm with a replacable joint though. The next time you do it all you will need is the joint like a lower one.
It's like Big Greenie said, unless they've already been changed once and you already have upper control arms with replaceable ball joints and the mechanic isn't aware of it.
If or when you buy new control arms, I would try to find some with the zerk fitting in the ball joint, I am not sure if they make them with the replacement control arms, but I prefer having serviceable ball joints over the sealed type.
Moog and Raybestos both make upper control arms with zerks on the ball joints. The reason I know is that I ordered the Raybestos arms to replace the Moog arms less than 2 years after installing the Moogs. The boots on both right and left Moog ball joints disintegrated. Seemed to be some kind of plastic. Didnt seem like rubber.
