Steering drift update..

Hey guys a while back I posted asking if anyone has found a solution to stop the truck from drifting while driving. I did srew down the nut on the box a little bit which helped for a day so I decided why not try a new stabalizer. Well i ordered the stabalizer from skyjacker (the HD OEM replacement) and the day I put it on you felt the difference! I might have to adjust the nut on the box again just a hair but for the most part the drifting has stopped and the truck drives much better.

Figured Id just throw it out there incase anyone else is having the same problem.

Yes the truck was going right and left in the lane. I had to constantly keep moving the wheel to keep it in the lane. After I did the jam nut on the steer box and the stabalizer it helped a lot.

Another thanks for the update, you'd be ammazed what a steering damper will do. Just for others, and including me that needs to adjust their steering box, how many turns of the screw, clockwise or counterclockwise after loosening the jam nut??

I'm no expert Mike and it doesn't sound as if you are real familiar with the process either, I'd tighten it 1/4 turn (clockwise) then tighten the jam nut and drive it. I'd do that till it felt right. That's the "better safe than sorry way", slow I admit, but safe. I've read on here that you can bugger these boxes up if you get them too tight.

Mine did the same thing, and after checking all the front end suspension and steering components for play and wear I am SLOWLY tightening the adjustment nut. I marked the adjustment nut with white out so I knew where it originally was. Loosen the jam nut and turn 1/4 or less clockwise. Tighten the jam nut and check to see if the adjustment stayed or moved. Drive for awhile and see how you like it, repeat as necessary. If this doesn't work I will consider a power steering system flush (not positive the PO didn't use steering fluid vice transmission fluid, no squeals or turning issues but it can't hurt, right?). Then it may be time for a new steering gear...

Does someone have a picture of where this nut is? Also, do the 2wd's have a steering stabilizer, because mine does NOT have one at all.

took me a day, no joke guess i am slow, to find it. no pics cuz too dark, but look on the driver's side of the engine bay about even with the front of the wheel, below and toward the bumper from the battery. There is a 4" square box (or so) with three or four bolts on the corners and a nut with an allen nut centered on the top. I am 5'10" and barely can reach it standing on the ground. I needed an extension to loosen the adjustment nut.

I clean it up real good, mark the original position with nail polish or the like, back the nut off about a full turn or so while keeping the adjuster in place(a ratchet wrench is pretty handy here), gently tighten it by hand till you get resistance, back off 1/4 turn and tighten nut back up. Drive it and see how that feels and adjust from there. Generally works pretty well for a temporary fix but your gonna need a new box someday. Not to mention that new box will sure steer like a dream.
