What do you mean "revving it a little"?
When warmed up, try opening the throttle all the way. (shut off the engine if this scares you)
When the throttle opens it should release the choke plate and allow it to open fully.
The stock chokes on these engines are Electrically assisted thermastatic chokes.
They have both a electrical connection and a choke stove. If it doesn't have an electrical connection, something is wrong. You may need a new choke thermostat housing.
Make sure the choke is operating freely. Use carb cleaner and work the choke butterfly back and forth untill it operates smoothly.
yeah, i got it fixed. it turns out that it wasn't even an electric choke. i cleaned out the the hot air intake tube and tried that. it didn't fix it. turns out the guy i bought the truck from, while "rebuilding" the carb had not only messed up the idle (which i had fixed right after buying the truck) but he also put the spring that is inside the thermostat on backwards. and also has choke screw adjusted wrong. its working like a charm now. i started it right up in 28 degree weather and drove it when it was barely even warmed up. thank you for all your help guys
If the choke is stock, it is a electrically assisted thermostatic choke. This would have an electrical connection from the altenator stator as well as a choke stove, like I mentioned earlier. All of the carbs in the 80's trucks are this way. Especially on the F-150.
However a lot of these trucks are no longer stock.
When I got my truck the hot air portion was gone and only the electric portion was intact. This had been adjusted to about 90 degrees out of adjustment. They hadn't bothered to close off the hot air passage though so it was basically a dead vacuum leak which I didn't know at the time. I tried to adjust it, assuming it was just an electric choke and never could get it to work quite right.
I eventually figured out how it was supposed to work and rigged up the hot air portion as well. Now it works like a charm. Yours is probably supposed to have the hot air AND electric portion as well. I would really recommend that you try to figure out what it would take to get the electric part working. They really are sweet when working as intended.
yeah, my choke is working perfectly now just with the hot air. there is no electrical connection. It sure is nice to have it working especially in cold *** nights.
