At the very minimum it is a good idea to be able to work on the fuel delivery systems of these trucks (lift pump, fuel filter assemply, IP, Injectors and return lines) and glow plugs. They are 90% of what goes wrong on these truck or effect the performance. Believe me, taking the time to learn these systems will save you big BIG $ and help to make sure your engine runs properly. My engine has never run as well as when I started fixing it and before that I spent $1000's on service that I can now see wasn't worth the $20 set of cresent wrenches that I bought to do the work myself.
thats right man, all you need for the fuel system is a razor knife, 2 x 5/8" wrenches, 1" deep socket, 3/4" open end wrench, custom 9/16" wrench, 7/16" for line clamp bolts, metal tubing bender or rubber line, channel locks or adjustable pliers and you are set. I would say aside from the 1" deep socket, most of us have that stuff. What to do with it, that comes from learning and experience, which i share with any open ear. Did i mention i love this site? When you can outtalk a ford tech with experience, it really makes me smile!
What do you need man? I dont mind helping people out if it is a minor to moderate repair, i dont overhaul engines is what i mean haha. As far as reliable diesel mechanics, wilson and proctor do "good work" if you have 100+ per hour for their labor. Let me know what you want to do, best part about coming up to the international house of pain(my garage) lol, i will show you how to do it so you can do it next time, been doing it since i got my truck all figured out haha.
Generous offer Wreckinball, don't know that I could impose on you like that though. Nothing really wrong with the truck, but glowplugs seem to cycle off quick (7 secs) and I fear changing them in case they snap break off.
If you are ever doing your injectors and IP I'd love to look over your shoulder. I'm guessing mine will need doing sometime, I tried flooring it going up a grade today in 4th at 60km and couldn't get any smoke that I could see.??
Reading about mechanical stuff helps, but seeing something being done and asking questions as you go is, for me, far and away the best way to learn something.
I heard somebody around here mention W&P as well. $100/hr for labour is crazy, but better that than some guy who doesn't know what he's doing wrecking your motor for $60/hr
wild, you can come up any time! even just to hang out and shoot the ****. i can show you lots and learn from your truck as well. let me know and everyone on the island, come one come all!! lol!
