I have a 2005 f250 PSD with a parking break problem. Sometimes when I try and engage it, it works as it should. Other times the pedal will go all the way to the floor with insufficient breaking force to keep the truck from rolling down a hill. I already had the local stealership tighten the break once and that worked for a month but now I am right back to the same old problem. Any suggestions?
You need to go underneath the vehicle yourself and inspect the backing/anchor plate for the parking brake mechanism. Mine were completely rusted thru. New plates for the F-series are really expensive, do a search for e-brake/parking brakes and you may find some pic's of the described damage, or if you are lucky a simple adjustment may do the trick.
If you remove the rear discs you may find the friction material delaminated from the shoe. [the e brake shoes are under the discs ]
Thats what mine were like. in the end the pieces wedged in and I couldn't move forward until i tried reverse first and broke them loose.
I just mentioned the emergency brake issue as related to an actual brake line failure I had - post is on this forum page "Close Call With Brake Failure". My incident is a good reminder to make sure your emergency brake is in working order. Emergency brake is definitely the appropriate name versus parking brake, lol!
Well looked at the brakes today. No rust to be found! I think that I just need to adjust the drums. This weekend I will put it on a lift and get that squared away. Will report back.
