My 05, f250, 6.0 has a quirky issue. Every morning it won't shift unless I let off the gas (diesel) first then it will up shift, let off the gas, next shift...after about a mile or two and any time for the rest of the day and night, smooth shifting without a hitch.
I don't dare pull out into oncoming traffic cuz the truck won't respond.
I bought the truck 7 months ago with 98,000 miles. At 100,000 I changed all fluids and filters so for me everything started at "0" miles if you will. I now have 107,000 miles. I know they didn't change the filter in the tranny pan but did change the filter under the front bumper. The one that looks like a toilet paper roll.
So...every car/truck ever built, you can start up first thing and drive away and Ford designs their trans to require a "warm up" before you drive off???? Oh, and the diesels shouldn't idel either...
you check the fluid level?
i got a mazda car that does the same when the weather gets a bit cooler..
so maybe its fords and mazdas that build them like that..
My 5R100W has a paper filter inside the pan, yours may only have a screen but i'd still want to pull it to check things out. Checking the level of the fluid was a big deal according to the fluid change manual, took 2 people. Fluid type is also very importaint "SP". My trans shifts ok when it's cold but better when its warm. (think most transmissions are that way)

I don't think it is a transmission related thing. I think it is specific to the diesel. As far as I know the gas trucks with the same transmission do not do it. I haven't heard of any 6.4 owners mentioning it either, so I wonder if it was just the 6.0 programming.

Mine does it year round. I do not notice any specific oil, coolant, or tranny temp that it correlates with. It just seems to be the first two gears, for a half mile or so. It feels a little like being in Tow/Haul.
Mine does this as well and always has when cold started for the first time of the day. Does not matter if its December or July . Letting truck warm up for a bit helps big time so I think Sandman with the thermostat comment is correct. After warm up its perfectly normal.
some engineer or tranny expert chime in here i may be wrong, but i think i read somewheres that the torqueshift has a thermostat in it.am i wrong?
Yes, it has a thermostat. When the transmission is colder than 165F the cooler flow is reduced to 10% of normal. That's the only difference, less flow to the cooler.
