Today i looked at a 04 f150xlt crew cab, here is the good stuff about it...it has low miles, under 50,000. 4.6 v8 engine, nice body, the interior is nice and i can buy it for 6 grand. Okay now for the bad, It has been sitting for about 2 years with no real use, does not run at the moment, Battery is dead, rotors are rusty but the wheels turn free, needs brakes, needs all the fluids changed, needs 2 new tires, and i am sure i am leaving some things out that come up when a vehical is not used for long peroids of time. (if i did let me know)
The seller is a long time friend. (20 years) he owes about 5 grand on it still, he just wants out from under it and said i could buy it for 6 thousand.
Question is... should i go for it? What could i expect to pay to have it gone through and to get it running again? (fluids mainly)i know what tires and a battery will cost. I'm guessing the fuel tank will need to be drained and fuel system cleaned?
Thanks in advance for any info you can provide me as i know nothing about newer trucks and what they cost to work on.
for the tires, look on Craigslist. you can find smoking deals daily if you look around. I found drag radial tires for my Mustang for $200 brand new...they would have been over $600 had I bought at a tire shop.
battery = $100 from just about anywhere. get the biggest CCA one you can find.
figure about $500 for an oil change + trans change + diff + t-case fluid changes. With somewhat periodic use, I wouldn't change anything but the oil...but if the truck has been sitting, moisture in the air will collect inside component. If that is the case, she needs a good flush.
but yeah, mainly I'd be worried about why the truck sat for 2 yrs. You don't just do that without a reason.
You may not have any problems at all... A local dive shop my girlfriend was working at had a 1997 F150 with the 4.6 sitting abandoned for 2 years. They asked her if she wanted it and all she did was put a new battery, fired right up, drove it for 3 years till she sold it. That 4.6 sure was strong, had 180,000 miles when we got rid of it.
Thanks for the help, i called the guy and asked some more questions,
first the truck did not die on the freeway like i had thought, a few years back his mom stoped driving and Paul was driving out of town every weekend to go help her out. so, insted of driving his truck back and forth he started driving her car, he told me he would start it every couple of weeks and drive her to the store or wherever they needed to go using his truck. but he did not start it for a few months and the battery went dead and there it sat not being used for a year and a half. I am going saturday with a new battery and well see what happens. if it starts i'm gonna buy it and sell all these old trucks i have! lol
don't sell all your old trucks...that's just...wrong
if your buds story is true, then yeah, grab a battery and have at it. hope a mouse didn't make a nest in the motor like the little *******s did in my 2006.
I would still plan on a oil change and flush the tranny. it's relatively cheap insurance
don't sell all your old trucks...that's just...wrong
Well, i will have to sell 1 or maybe 2 of them... but i can never get rid of my 65 f100, it's special to me.
Thanks for all the help and advice, I will take some pic's of it and post them tomorrow. I am Sooooo glad i did not buy a new truck! I hate having payments!
